A fantastic way to rejuvenate a chair or sofa is to give it a new coat! If you need help selecting fabrics for your seating I am very happy to help, The companies I use most frequently are Romo, Ian Mankin, Designers Guild and Linwood, there are a couple of examples below of top cover replacements, and also you can find some before and after pictures in the gallery.
This sofa had a good solid frame and under upholstery so just required a new cover.
The cover is tailored to fit and is fully removable in this case.
Zip at the rear, and velcro around base so the cover can be removed and reattached to the base of the sofa.
The fabric on this chair was worn and dirty, so my client chose a new similar fabric to replace the old.
The cover is part tailored to fit the shape
It is then fixed onto the frame with seat and cushion added.
If your much loved old chair or sofa has seen better days, has sagged, worn, or bust a spring or two, I can restore to it's former glory and give you many more years of joy with it. I will assess the piece and decipher what can be kept - keeping as much of the original stuffings and materials as possible, and replace what is too worn to keep.. The chair will then be recovered in a fabric or leather of your choice. Inner materials will be replaced as was intended when originally made.
This poor old girl needed a complete strip down, needless to say!
Everything needed to be replaced apart from the original horsehair stuffing, which was washed, carded and reused
The original pin beading was restored and covered in hand stitched leather, which gave the chair it's unique and original finish.
This armchair seat has been given replacement webbing, springs and lashing - hand tied and knotted using tough laid cord
This chair arm has been rebuilt using horsehair and hessian. The hessian has beens stitched to form the scroll arm shape, and a second stuffing of hair creates shape and gives softness to the arm.
after the springs comes the horsehair stuffed pad with a stitched front edge, This creates a strong base built to last!
Cushions are made with a down feather mix depending on preference - the more down, the more luxurious! The feather/down is encased in strong feather proof ticking. This one is for the arm of a sofa.
A lining of cotton callico is used underneath the top cover. This one has been stitched to form the correct shape for buttoning.
The hand stitching of hessian and horsehair creates the shape of the seat. This is a close up of a chair back getting shaped by the stitching and knotting of linen thread.
